A Melville adventure

Agterplaas B&B Guest House is the oldest bed and breakfast in Melville, South Africa. Its comfortable and relaxed atmosphere has stood the test of time in the South African hospitality industry. It is located at the foot of Melville Koppies; a nature reserve and Johannesburg City Heritage Site.

These Koppies are the last conserved relic of Johannesburg’s ridges as they were before the discovery of gold in 1886. The area is rich in history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Early Stone Age, around 500,000 years ago.
Jannie du Toit, the renowned South African artist, along with his wife Therina, established the Agterplaas B&B Guest House in 1999. Today, Guest House remains in the family and continues to offer a unique South African experience and century old furnishings.
The Guest House is perfectly situated behind the bohemian 7th Street in Melville. Not only known for its vibrant dining scene, and trendy eateries but also home to De La Crème Patisserie a 37-year-old bakery, deli and café that has been serving the community with fresh, high-quality baked goods and meals for decades.
If pastries aren’t your thing that’s fine, maybe try Bookdealers of Melville, which has also been around for over 30 years offering a wide range of collectible and second-hand books.
Agterplaas guests have exclusive access to 7th Street from the Guest House via a secret passageway made available for your convenience and adventure.
If you don’t feel like going outside that’s also alright, the Guest House will hook you up with dinner if you make arrangements with them.
There are 14 spacious rooms available, some of which are wheelchair accessible and all of which come with aircon, Wi-Fi, a bar fridge, a TV and coffee and tea facilities. The bed was so comfortable that if it wasn’t for the promise of breakfast, getting up would be challenging.
La Belle Vie Adventures spent a night at Agterplaas B&B to experience its charm first hand. Our room was equipped with a ball and claw bath so we took the opportunity to soak under candle light and relax with a glass of wine.
At breakfast a wide selection of mouthwatering possibilities awaits you. From freshly baked bread to the traditional English breakfast, to omelettes, vegetarian and continental options all prepared in Agterplaas’s kitchen. Breakfast is also available to the public from 07h00 to 10h00. Did we mention freshly baked bread. We did hey.
After breakfast we ascended a spiral staircase to a heavenly view of Melville Koppies from a deck the Guest House has kitted out with comfy loungers for Guest to enjoy. From here we enjoyed a cup of coffee (or beverage of choice), the view, the flora, the fresh air, the birds and the music they make for little while before check out.
The next time you need a short left from life for a night or a venue for a function or gathering, or just a delicious morning meal, try Agterplaas B&B Guest House. We can vouch for their attention to detail, hospitality and service.
